How to Review Surveillance Recordings

Something happened on a camera, and now you need the footage: to confirm what it was, find the exact detection, and see the moments on either side. The player is built for that. It gives you DVR-style controls and a detection timeline, so you can get from "check the north entrance around 8 PM" to the frame that matters in a few moves. This guide walks the review, from opening the camera to landing on the moment.

To learn how the player and its parts work, see Understanding Live Camera Playback.

Prerequisites

  • The camera has recorded footage for the period you want to review.
  • Membership in a group with permission to view the camera and its recordings.

Open the Camera

  1. Go to Library > Surveillance > Cameras.
  2. Select the camera to open it in the player.

The player opens on the live feed, so your first move is to step back into the recording.

Note: Every recording is saved to the Recording Folder set in the Surveillance app settings, inside the Library. To find footage without going camera by camera, open that folder and browse the recordings directly. See Understanding Surveillance Recordings.

Seek to the Moment

You've got two ways to get close, then fine-tune.

  1. Jump in big strides with Prev hr and Next hr, then close in with the fixed steps: -15m, -5m, -1m, -30s, and their forward equivalents.
  2. Drag along the timeline to scrub freely, and use the DAY to SEC zoom to go from a whole day down to second-by-second precision when you need a tight read.

Tip: If you know exactly when it happened, skip the stepping. Select the calendar button, enter the Date and Time (24h) as HH:MM:SS, and select Go to jump straight there.

Jump Straight to a Detection

Often the fastest path isn't a time at all, it's the detection itself.

  1. In the Events panel, select a class chip such as PERSON to filter the list to what you're after.
  2. Select an event to send the playhead right to that detection.
  3. Or select a marker in a timeline lane to jump to that moment without leaving the timeline.

Confirm What Was Detected

  1. Turn on Overlay to draw detection boxes over the video, so you can see exactly what the camera flagged.
  2. Adjust the playback Speed, from 0.25x to 8x, to slow down a fast moment or skim a quiet stretch.

Return to Live

  • Select GO LIVE to snap back to the live edge and resume real-time monitoring.
